McCarthy: America Can No Longer Wait, We Must Take Action To Grow Our Economy
Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) gave the following remarks at a House Republican press conference on the need to grow our economy and create jobs immediately.
“Good morning. The President a year ago said it was the “Summer of Recovery.” We are now 28 straight months with unemployment above 8%. Yesterday, Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said that they own the economy. And what are the facts of owning the economy; Since the stimulus 1.9 million Americans have lost their jobs. Since the President has taken office gasoline prices are up more than 100 percent. Health insurance premiums up more than 19%. Food stamp recipients up more than 39%. The only two major factors that go down are home values and start-ups. And the difficulty is when you look forward to the future, what does it say?
“Start-ups in the last twelve months are at the lowest point in a decade. I want to stress that – the lowest point in a decade. If you take the end of the last recession from 2001 to 2007, small business are those with 500 employees or less, created more than 7 million jobs. Those with 500 more actually decreased in jobs. There is a fundamental difference between an entrepreneur and a government job. An entrepreneur does not take a job from anyone, they create jobs. Well this environment, these Democrat policies have crushed it to a new low. That’s why the Republicans have a plan that will unshackle America, reform the regulation, create a tax atmosphere that actually allows you to compete with the rest of the world and invest in American jobs and American energy. There has to be a fundamental change here. And we challenge the Senate to take our bills up as we move them off the floor, because America can no longer wait.”
