McCarthy Statement on Debt Ceiling Negotiations

Washington, D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) released the following statement regarding the debt ceiling negotiations:

“Republicans have been at the table for months to ensure our nation pays its bills, and have made it absolutely clear we have a spending problem, not a revenue problem.  However, the President has continued to insist on raising taxes on hard-working families and small businesses.  House Republicans have said from the start that tax increases cannot pass through the House. This is a fundamental point of contention, and we will not allow more policies to be enacted that will further damage our economy and endanger job creation.

“We are committed to ensuring our nation can pay the bills that have been incurred by this Administration, but the spending and borrowing that has put our country on the verge of a debt crisis must stop. Our leaders will continue to negotiate with leaders in the Senate within the framework of Cut, Cap and Balance, and they have my full support.”
