Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in recent days has been warning that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is running out of money for aid disaster victims as soon as Monday.
Leader Reid On Disaster Relief & FEMA Budget: “They Are Out Of Money, So It Is Desperate.” The only money they are spending now deals with Tropical Storm Lee and Hurricane Irene. They have no more money. They are out of money. So it is desperate.” (Sen. Reid, Congressional Record, S.5732, 9/20/11)
Leader Reid Promises Money To FEMA & Disaster Victims “As Quickly As We Can, And We’re Going To Do That.” “We need to get this relief funding to the American people as quickly as we can and we’re going to do that,” Reid told reporters.” (Alexander Bolton, “Both Parties Promise To Pass Disaster Relief Funding Without Delay, The Hill, 9/7/11)
Yet, in a sudden reversal, the Senate Majority Leader said that his colleagues will not agree to the House’s Continuing Resolution that doubles the President’s emergency funding request and meets the budget level Leader Reid agreed to in August under the Budget Control Act of 2011. Senate Democrats are playing political games, when Americans are suffering and in need of help.
Senate Majority Leader Threatens Government Shutdown Rather Than Funding FEMA: “We’re Not Going To Cave On This.” “Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) warned Tuesday there is a chance that the government could shutter by the end of this month. Criticizing House Republicans for the disaster relief provisions in their budget bill, Reid told reporters, ‘We’re not going to cave on this.’”(Bob Cusack, “Reid Warns Shutdown Is Possible,” The Hill, 9/20/11)
