McCarthy Statement on May Jobs Numbers

Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-22) released the following statement regarding this morning’s employment report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

“Economic indicators from the month of May, including this morning’s employment report and yesterday’s downward revision of first quarter GDP growth to 1.9 percent from 2.2 percent, are confirmation that our economy is once again stagnant. Economic uncertainty continues to hold back private sector growth and new hiring. Adding to the uncertainty is a complete lack of leadership from the President and Senate Democrats. The one thing Americans know for sure is that our economy cannot and will not be fixed from the campaign trail.

“We know the largest potential for growth in this country is through empowering our entrepreneurs and small businesses. Yet, they are unable to grow and hire under the weight of overregulation, the looming threat of the largest tax hike in history and the “new normal” of $3.60 for a gallon of gas. Our job creators are looking to Washington for leadership on the economic and fiscal challenges we face, and not a gimmicky “to-do” list on a post-it note that even members of the President’s own party say is not a priority. It’s time for the President and Senate Leader Reid to act, as House Republicans have, to spur growth and get the millions of unemployed Americans back to work.”
