Whip McCarthy Statement on Passage of Water Rights Protection

Washington D.C. – House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement regarding House passage of H.R. 3189, Water Rights Protection Act:

“In many parts of our country, livelihoods and communities are built on the bounty of natural resources and the ability for private citizens to harvest them through private property rights. For instance, a major difference between the oil and gas boom in North America and the languishing that is occurring in the rest of the world is individuals’ rights to the resources on their land. One resource of particular importance for all families and communities that thrive off the land is water. Unfortunately, the federal government’s overreach on matters regarding the rule of law have sparked concerns that Federal agencies are insisting on private water rights being relinquished in exchange for unrelated permitting matters on private land. This unprecedented move would undermine the free enterprise system that is responsible for the exceptional expansion and prosperity this country has experienced over two hundred years. I want to thank my fellow western-state colleague Rep. Scott Tipton for protecting the indelible rights of private property and I encourage Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid from Nevada to move this bill to the Senate floor for passage.”
