House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for August 2014:
“Today, U.S. employers reported the slowest level of job growth this entire year, marking yet another disappointing report on the economy. Equally disappointing, the number of unemployed people who just stopped looking for work has increased to levels not seen since the 1970s.
“After years of recession, this slowest recovery since World War II continues at an almost unnoticeable pace. Americans are losing hope that brighter times are ahead, and Pew Research reports that there has been essentially no rise in economic optimism since 2008. It’s time for new policies that will actually boost employment and wages and will restore optimism throughout the country. That is why this month the House will pass legislation to grow the economy and build upon the energy revolution that has already done so much to help local communities across the nation. We will also pass legislation by Representative Bill Cassidy (LA-06) to protect workers from rising premiums under Obamacare and give small businesses more certainty when it comes to health care.
“Americans deserve more than wishful thinking. They need solutions, and the House has offered and will continue to offer just that.”
