House Votes to Stop Next Wave of Insurance Cancellations
Washington, D.C. – Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 3522, the Employee Health Care Protection Act of 2014:
“After the President’s promise that ‘if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan,’ tens of thousands of Americans received cancellation notices. Now, Obamacare is about to force cancellation notices on potentially millions more.
“This year—after a unilateral delay by the President—the small business mandate comes into effect, and many more who like their health care plans will lose them. H.R. 3522 actually keeps the President’s promise by going beyond the Obama Administration’s unilateral actions and truly allowing small and large businesses and employees who like their coverage to keep it.
“In the past, 22 of our Democratic colleagues supported delaying the individual mandate, 35 supported delaying the employer mandate, and 39 voted to allow individuals to keep their health care plans. Today, I am pleased that once again 25 Democrats joined House Republicans in support of H.R. 3522, sending a message to the President that when people make promises, they should do their best to keep them.
“I applaud my friend Representative Bill Cassidy (LA-06) for his leadership in protecting Americans from Obamacare’s negative consequences and for keeping the President to his promise. Until the day when we repeal this broken law and replace it with a free-market, patient-centered alternative, we should make sure it does as little harm as possible to the American people.”
