Let’s Hire More of Our Heroic Veterans

It’s no secret that our veterans are some of the hardest working individuals in the world. Through their training and service, they have shown commitment, responsibility, and a work ethic valuable in every line of work. And in our professional and specialized military, they have learned particularly useful skills in the modern economy.

Unfortunately, when many of our veterans come home they face the same low wages, reduced hours, and high unemployment that has been hitting all of America.  In fact, the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans is actually higher than the national unemployment rate.

One of the biggest drags on America’s labor market is Obamacare, which punishes employers who want to expand and cuts down employee hours. Under Obamacare, businesses are required to provide their workers government-approved health care once the business has 50 or more full-time equivalent employees. This means that many people, including veterans, don’t get hired because smaller businesses can’t afford to cross that threshold.

The Hire More Heroes Act, introduced by Representative Rodney Davis (IL-13), makes sure no employers are penalized for hiring a veteran and that no veteran is left jobless because of Obamacare’s employer mandate. The bill does this by excluding veterans from the employer mandate threshold if they already have health care through TRICARE or the VA, both of which satisfies the minimum essential coverage requirement of Obamacare.

Though the House already passed this bill by a widely bipartisan vote of 406 to 1, it was soon stopped in the Senate where Senate Democrats refused to take it up. But the House won’t accept failure for our veterans. Come January, at the beginning of the new Congress, the House will pass the Hire More Heroes Act again, sending it back to the Senate so that it can finally reach the President’s desk.
