Free Trade Helps Strengthen America’s Economy
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the introduction of the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities and Accountability Act of 2015 to reauthorize Trade Promotion Authority (TPA), which strengthens Congress’s role in trade policy:
“Free and open trade is good for America and the world’s economy. As my constituents from California’s 23rd district have shown, trade helps businesses and workers here at home by opening up new markets for American goods and services, creating new jobs and increasing take-home pay. Today, I am happy that Congress has begun the process to increase trade with our allies and give our economy new avenues for growth. This strong TPA legislation outlines Congressional negotiating objectives that the Administration must meet while preserving the constitutional right to approve or disapprove any trade agreement the president negotiates. This legislation also ensures additional consultation, transparency, and accountability by the Administration, and is essential for ensuring that America gets the best trade deals.
“I want to thank my friend and Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, Paul Ryan, on his relentless work to prepare this legislation for committee action. I look forward to getting this good, bipartisan bill to the floor to help put our economy on stronger footing.”
