Leader McCarthy: The House is Making Sure We’re Protecting Our Country
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) spoke today at a Republican leadership press conference on the Senate Democrats’ filibuster of TPA and the House’s national security agenda.
McCarthy’s full remarks are below, or watch them online here.
“Before I begin, I just want to convey our condolences and our prayers to those who lost their lives in the Amtrak crash and those who are recovering from it. And we’ll make sure to follow through on the difficulties of what caused this.
“First, I’d like to express my disappointment in the Senate Democrats. They abandoned their President yesterday. This was the President’s big economic, bipartisan agenda that he has for the whole year. Even those that said they were with it and supported it walked in and voted against him.
“Now I believe trade—TPA has the opportunity to come back. I believe it’s good for this country, not just from an economic point of view, but also from a strategic point of view of what the world is looking like today.
“Many of you heard or saw the quote that I’d like to read now from the former CIA Deputy Director Mike Morell: ‘I’ve never seen more threats to our country at any time in my thirty-three years in the business. … I think in the history of the country.’ We’ve heard many times that currently our friends don’t trust us and our enemies don’t fear us.
“This House believes that we have a role. We have a role to make America stronger. And when you look at just this week’s agenda you’ll hear from the Chairman of Armed Services taking up NDAA and the funds for our military—but also the transformation to make sure our tax dollars go further and that we’re better protected.
“Iran Nuclear Agreement Review, we’ll take that up to make sure that we all have a say in the process to know which direction we’re going.
“And the USA Freedom Act. We want to make sure we protect our civil liberties, but also protect every American from the terrorist attacks, capabilities of what people want to do to America.
“I think these are all good bills, but they also show a direction of where this House will make sure we’re protecting the rest of this country. I just hope the Democrats can work together to actually put America first, not just our economy, but also our security as we move forward and take up TPA.”
