As House Works, Senate Democrats Plan Summer of Obstruction
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) spoke today at a Republican leadership press conference about Senate Democrats’ planned summer of obstruction.
McCarthy’s remarks are below, or watch them online here.
“Good morning. Today, we’ll be starting with the Department of Defense appropriations. As we move through and get done the Department of Defense, that will be half of all the appropriation bills that will be moved through the House already.
“I am disturbed, though, by what I am reading in the papers and hearing on the Senate side from the Democrats. It’s as though they want to create an obstruction throughout the summer—that they want to stop the movement of, one, of funding our troops and protecting them in the process, our ability to fund the government, and trying to filibuster throughout the summer. But what is even more disturbing to hear is [Senator] Schumer say it’s in coordination with the White House. I think we all have a responsibility to get the work done.
“As you saw, we have posted legislation dealing with TPA—it gives us the flexibility to be able to bring that to the floor at the appropriate time. We are working with both sides to get this done, and as soon as we have the votes we’ll be moving the bill.”
