House Acts Against Frivolous Lawsuit Abuse

Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House passage of H.R. 758, the Lawsuit Abuse Reduction Act:

“Too often in this country, unscrupulous lawyers looking to get rich file frivolous lawsuits with absolutely no consequences. They make money if the lawsuit proceeds and suffer no consequences if it doesn’t, which only ensures that more bad lawsuits are filed. These lawsuits are a waste of resources, money, and precious court time and can harass individuals and small businesses that are just following the rules. By imposing penalties on those who file baseless lawsuits in federal courts, this bill will ensure that these types of lawyers think twice before they go to court. Chairman Lamar Smith (TX-21) deserves credit for his leadership on this bill to clean up a problem in our court system that has existed for too long.”
