Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on House adoption of the Conference Report of the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act:
“Congress is getting things done the way they’re supposed to be done. Moving through the traditional processes, the House and Senate have come to an agreement to fund our transportation infrastructure for five years, the first long-term highway bill in 10 years.
“Among the many reforms in this bill, the Surface Transportation Program will now operate as a block grant, giving states the flexibility they need to fund the most necessary transportation projects. This bill also streamlines the environmental review and permitting process so that our infrastructure improvements don’t get bogged down in unnecessary red tape. Moreover, this bill wisely rejects the notion from some in Washington that we must burden middle class families with a gas tax increase to fund critical infrastructure programs. Thanks to Chairman Shuster’s (PA-09) leadership, we have a bill negotiated and paid for that is a responsible way to fund transportation infrastructure and keep America moving.”
