Yesterday Showed a Clear Contrast Between the President and the House
Washington, D.C. – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) spoke at a leadership press conference today on the House’s work to keep America safe and the President’s misguided and dangerous plan to close Guantanamo Bay.

“When you look for a contrast between the House’s work and what the President does, Gitmo is a prime example. After the attack in Paris, I put together a task force on counterterrorism and homeland security. We passed bills to pause the refugee program and restrict travel from terrorist safe havens.
“Lots of you are probably following the Presidential election, but what was the House doing? The House was continuing to act, and if you watched yesterday—two more bills. We had the Foreign Fighter Review Act of 2016—Will Hurd—and the National Strategy to Combat Terrorist Travel Act with Katko.
“By the time the House was passing those bills, the President was talking about his plan to close Gitmo. As the President talked about this plan, Spanish and Moroccan authorities arrested a former Gitmo detainee. It appears as though after he was released he started recruiting for ISIL. You know, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence says 6 detainees that have been released under Obama have rejoined the fight.
“So the question to the President is, why would he release anyone more and why would he ever want to bring those people to the lands of America?”
