Washington, DC – House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) released the following statement on the introduction of the supplemental disaster appropriations bill:
“From historic hurricanes to wildfires, this year’s natural disasters have taken a substantial toll on the lives and communities of those impacted. This hurricane season alone had three of the five most devastating and costly hurricanes in our country’s history. In California, the worst wildfire in our state’s history torched the northern part of our Golden State. As we sit here today, new wildfires have consumed hundreds of thousands of acres, and brave first responders across our state continue to fight the Thomas fire in southern California.
“This emergency package reflects the commitment of the federal government to provide relief to our neighbors who have been affected by these extraordinary natural disasters and are working to rebuild. This package accommodates the request from Governor Brown and the entire California congressional delegation by allocating more funds for relief and recovery from this fall’s California wildfires. Additionally, it includes language spearheaded by Rep. Mimi Walters and Rep. Mike Thompson providing targeted tax relief to allow wildfire victims to deduct property damage costs, offer penalty-free withdrawals from retirement accounts, and encourage charitable giving to individuals and communities working to rebuild. Finally, as the cleanup continues, I am pleased that this bill ensures California receives additional help for debris removal by ramping up Federal payments for up to 90% of the eligible costs. As our country and state rebuild from Mother Nature’s worst, the federal government is committed to helping each neighborhood recover and rebuild.”
