House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in NIFLA v. Becerra:

“It is hard to imagine a more disturbing violation of our rights than compelling people to communicate messages they believe are abhorrent. That is precisely what Sacramento did when it forced pro-life pregnancy centers across California to promote free or low-cost abortion.

“Sacramento’s abortion-speech requirement was a slap in the face to pro-life groups that care for vulnerable women and their children. These groups are motivated by the belief that every human life has worth and dignity. The State of California told them to repudiate that belief by advertising abortion.

“The Supreme Court’s decision vindicates the First Amendment rights of all Americans, but especially pro-life Californians. I celebrate this decision along with my constituents and all pro-life Californians who care for the vulnerable in our society.

“I want to thank the National Institute of Family and Life Advocates, the Alliance Defending Freedom, and many others who spoke up to defend our First Amendment rights in this case. Justice would not have been possible without their hard work. Now pro-life pregnancy centers can continue their life-saving work free from the threat of government coercion.”
