Mr. Speaker, I want to thank [House Foreign Affairs Committee] Chairman [Eliot] Engel, [House Armed Services Committee] Chairman [Adam] Smith, Representative [Ro] Khanna, and others for ensuring that the House expresses its views on the humanitarian catastrophe in Yemen.

Mr. Chairman, my fellow colleagues, I rise with great sadness to announce the passing of one of this House's great and good members, Former Representative John David Dingell Jr., who served in this House for almost a full six decades. His father preceded him for 22 years, and his wife, our beloved colleague, Debbie Dingell, serves now.

This resolution is so simple. Shutdown is stupid. That's all it says.

After five weeks of an unnecessary, costly, and painful shutdown, the american people have been reminded how critical the work our federal employees perform is to our national security and economic security. Americans were horrified to learn that many civilian federal employees live paycheck to paycheck.

Madam Speaker, I rise to join with my colleagues in highlighting the absurdity of the Trump-McConnell shutdown and share some of the ways, just some few ways, it's affecting Americans in my district.
