Dear Colleague:

I hope you’ve had a productive district work period and had an opportunity to observe Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday with your constituents. I also want to thank you for highlighting the 10th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision, and House passage last year of H.R. 1, the For The People Act, to overturn the worst impacts of that decision.

Next week, the House will take additional action to reassert Congress’s constitutional authority on matters of war. This comes after the House passed a war powers resolution earlier this month to limit the President’s ability to take military action against Iran. The House will consider legislation from Rep. Barbara Lee to repeal the 2002 authorization for the use of force in Iraq, which was intended to enable the removal of Saddam Hussein, but is still used today to justify the use of American military force in Iraq. We will also take up legislation from Rep. Ro Khanna to prohibit the use of federal funds for military action in or against Iran absent Congressional authorization.

Also next week, the Financial Services Credit Reporting Reform Act will be on the Floor. This bill will improve various aspects of the consumer credit reporting system and impose new regulations on credit bureaus.

The week of February 3rd, the House will take up the PRO Act to protect the right to organize and bargain collectively. We will also take up a supplemental appropriations bill to address the recent earthquakes in Puerto Rico, which have been devastating to our fellow Americans.

The week of February 10th, I will bring a package of wilderness and public lands bills from the Natural Resources Committee to the Floor. This package includes legislation to protect 1.3 million acres of wilderness in California and Colorado and is part of House Democrats’ ongoing effort to protect public lands and promote access to them for all Americans.

Also that week, I expect to bring legislation to the Floor to remove the deadline for ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), which would ensure the ERA can become part of our Constitution when it is ratified by a sufficient number of states.

Other pieces of legislation could come to the Floor during this work period, pending committee action. House Democrats are continuing to get important work done on behalf of our constituents. I continue to urge Leader McConnell to stop obstructing progress for the people and to allow votes on the legislation we’ve sent to the Senate.

With kindest regards, I am

Sincerely yours,

STENY H. HOYER
House Majority Leader
