Democratic Policies Build a Stronger Economy
MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, I released a report that demonstrates how the American economy has performed consistently better under Democratic presidents than Republican ones. The analysis shows a clear pattern: Democratic policies have helped grow our economy and increased the number of jobs in the U.S. House Democrats will continue to discuss this record and advocate for policies, such as House Democrats’ Make It In America plan, that will support job creation and economic growth.
With the end of the fiscal year quickly approaching, Congress must pass legislation to fund the government before the end of the month. I am hopeful the Senate will act soon on a bill that includes funding to respond to the Zika virus and does not contain any poison pill provisions. Thousands of Americans have already contracted the Zika virus, and emergency funds to respond to the growing public health crisis have almost run out. Once the Senate passes a bipartisan bill, I urge Republican leaders to work with Democrats to pass it in the House.
Finally, I was disappointed House Republicans wasted time this week on partisan, political messaging bills to appeal to their base ahead of the election. There are critical issues that we should be focused on, like funding the government and combatting Zika, and we also must act to address other public health issues: funding to address opioid addiction, resources to respond to the drinking water crisis in Flint, and legislation to prevent gun violence. House Democrats will continue to call for votes on legislation to keep Americans safe and healthy.
Sincerely yours,
Steny H. Hoyer
