MESSAGE FROM THE DEMOCRATIC WHIP
This week, I was pleased to receive the support of my colleagues and be elected by acclamation as Democratic Whip for the 115th Congress. I look forward to working with them to stand up for the plurality of Americans who did not vote for Donald Trump or his agenda. We have a responsibility to ensure that those Americans are heard in Congress, and we will be unified in holding the incoming Administration accountable while presenting a responsible alternative agenda that ensures all Americans have the chance to succeed and Make It In America.
On the House Floor this week, Members of Congress came together to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, an important step in improving health care in America by taking steps to address the opioid crisis, authorizing Vice President Biden’s cancer ‘moonshot,’ and promoting medical innovation. Going forward, Republicans in the House and Senate have the responsibility to work with Democrats to ensure the National Institute of Health and the Food and Drug Administration have the resources necessary to promote research and innovation.
I’m also pleased the House passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2017 today. While I disagree with some of the provisions included by Republicans, it is a compromise bill that will ensure our troops have the resources necessary to carry out their mission.
Lastly, while these two bipartisan pieces of legislation passed the House, I was disappointed that Republicans voted to waste additional taxpayer dollars on a partisan panel to attack women’s health. They voted to spend an additional $800,000 on a political witch-hunt that has failed to produce any evidence of illegal activity. Rather than waste time and taxpayer dollars, we ought to be focusing on the priorities of the American people, such as job creation and economic opportunity.
