Message from the Democratic Whip

On Monday, the world witnessed the President of the United States side with Russian President Putin over our own intelligence community, which has confirmed that Russia interfered in the election and continues to attack our democracy. While some House Republicans have expressed concern, it is deeply disappointing that House Republican leaders refuse to take action to protect Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the election and work across the aisle to secure our elections.

Yesterday, Democrats gave House Republicans an opportunity to vote on an amendment to fund grants for election security, and they refused to join us in supporting the measure so we can protect the integrity of our elections from the serious threat of Russian interference. I was deeply alarmed they chose party and Putin over protecting our democracy.
While House Republicans fail to take action, I was proud to announce the introduction of the Secure America from Russian Interference Act yesterday, which would hold Russia accountable for its malign activities and safeguard our country. The legislation includes a number of House Democrats’ bills, many of which are bipartisan, and aim to achieve four objectives: hold Russia accountable; strengthen our nation’s election security; bolster our international alliances, including NATO; and seek constructive dialogue with the Russian people.  I urge Republican leadership to bring this bill to the Floor for a vote so Congress can take steps to protect the American people.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
