Fact Checking the President’s Latest Lie

As President Trump continues to blame Congress for his cruel and inhumane policy of separating children from their parents at the border, we wanted to be sure you saw this round up in today’s NBC News First Read of all the times that his Administration confirmed that it is, in fact, his policy (including Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Fox News just yesterday). Here’s a look at the quotes:

Attorney General Jeff Sessions: “I have put in place a ‘zero tolerance’ policy.” [Speech, 5/7/18]

Attorney General Jeff Sessions: “Hopefully people will get the message … and not break across the border unlawfully” [Fox News, 6/18/18]

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly: “It could be a tough deterrent.” [NPR Interview, 5/11/18]

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly: “Yes, I am considering it in order to deter more movement along this terribly dangerous network.” [CNN Interview, 3/6/18]

White House aide Stephen Miller: “The message is that no one is exempt from immigration law.” [New York Times, 6/16/18]

The takeaway: This is a Trump Administration policy, and President Trump can reverse it on his own – any time.
