Message from the Democratic Whip

This week, I gave a speech announcing how House Democrats are updating the Make It In America plan based on feedback we received from Americans on the Make It In America Listening Tour I’ve led to nine cities over the past year. This economic agenda focuses on three key areas where Congress can be a partner in creating the best conditions to support job creation and economic opportunity: education, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure. This agenda also complements House Democrats’ “For the People” platform focused on making health care and prescription drugs more affordable, raising wages, and eliminating corruption in government. House Democrats will continue to focus on this economic agenda this fall as a contrast to the Republican agenda of giving tax cuts to the wealthy and increasing health care costs.

On the Floor this week, House Republicans brought to the Floor a number of bills related to health care in order to distract from their sabotage of Americans’ health care, which has resulted in higher costs, lower quality coverage, and more uninsured Americans. The bills Republicans brought to the Floor were not paid for or offset and fail to make up for their efforts to undermine the Affordable Care Act. House Democrats will continue to hold Republicans accountable for increasing health care costs and kicking millions of Americans off coverage while Democrats have a plan to lower health care costs and prescription drug prices.

After creating a family separation crisis at the border, the Trump Administration missed a second court-imposed deadline to reunite separated children from their parents last night. The President and his Administration created this crisis, and it is shameful that House Republicans have done nothing to address it. Democrats will continue to hold the Trump Administration accountable and urge Congressional Republicans to work with Democrats to reverse the Trump Administration’s inhumane policy that makes it virtually impossible for people fleeing violence to seek protection in the United States.

Sincerely yours,

Steny H. Hoyer
