WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) announced today that the House will vote next Thursday, March 28, on a resolution introduced by Congressman Joe Kennedy III (MA-04), Chair of the Equality Caucus’s Transgender Equality Task Force, which rejects President Trump’s ban on transgender Americans serving in the military and urges the Department of Defense to not reinstate a discriminatory policy.

“President Trump’s ban on transgender Americans who are serving or wish to serve their country is discriminatory, and the House will vote next week to reject it and call on the Department of Defense to not reinstate it,” said Leader Hoyer. “Not only does it denigrate the service of patriots serving in the military, but it weakens our national security by undermining our ability to recruit and retain the talented personnel we need. I thank Rep. Kennedy for introducing this resolution, and I hope that all Members will come together next week to vote for it and send a resounding message to this Administration that this ban does not reflect our nation’s values and should not be reinstated.”

“Our country is founded on the promise that we are all created equal.  Our history is written by men and women who have sacrificed life and limb to make good on that promise.  And today, our march towards that ultimate goal of lived and legal equality is being led by transgender servicemembers who volunteer to fight for our nation and its promise,” said Congressman Kennedy. “By implementing a ban that ignores basic science, the sworn testimony of military leadership, and mountains of research, our President and his enablers will inject intolerance into our military, demean their sacrifice and cast doubt on our commitment to that promise. This resolution says to the thousands of trans servicemembers keeping us safe and every other American that their government not only sees them, hears them, and fights with them, but that they count in this country.”
