WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this evening in response to a letter from the Congressional Budget Office announcing that an estimate of the impacts of House Republicans’ Affordable Care Act repeal bill will not be available until early next week:

"Under the regular order that Speaker Ryan promised would govern the House on his watch, the proper procedure is for a committee markup on major legislation to take place after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has had an opportunity to analyze it and release an estimate of its cost and economic impact.  With the CBO’s announcement this evening that it is in the process of preparing such an estimate for House Republicans’ Affordable Care Act repeal legislation and will not be ready to release its findings until early next week, the markups scheduled for tomorrow ought to be postponed until after that estimate has been released.

“The American people deserve to know how much Republicans’ repeal plan will cost consumers, raise the deficit, and impact our health insurance markets, including for those covered under employer-based plans.  If the Republican chairmen choose not to reschedule their markups to next week, it will be a flagrant admission that Republicans are seeking to hide the full details and impact of their dangerous legislation from the public.”
