“It is a stupid, irresponsible, and dangerous policy that [Republicans] are pursuing by keeping the government shut down. And two men have the opportunity to open up the government, and that is Donald Trump and Senator [Mitch] McConnell. It is just crystal clear: we have passed now [ten] different bills that would help open up the government... People are expressing their anger and frustration and their fear that they won't be able to pay their bills and support their families. [The House of Representatives] should not be doing business as usual.”

"On DACA and TPS, these are crises created by this President. This President is the one who took away DACA protections. This President is the one who said… he's going to kick people out of the country who had been here under [Temporary Protected Status]. This President created a crisis. Now, he thinks [he’s] making a deal by partially, partially alleviating the crisis. That’s not a deal… Eighty-six percent of the American people have consistently said we ought to protect all of those who are DACA-eligible. [President Trump] suggested [temporary protection for] 800,000 [DACA-eligible young people], [when the DACA population] is 1.8 million. He suggested just three years of protection. We think it ought to be permanent, and there ought to be a path of citizenship, so the offer he made was totally unacceptable...”

"If it were up to [Democrats], [the shutdown] will end today. If it is up to [President] Trump and [Senator] McConnell, you will have to ask them why did they want to keep 800,000 people hostage and the millions of people that those people serve on a daily basis. Shutting down this government, shutting down the government of the people, the American government is a stupid, irresponsible, dangerous policy, and it ought to stop now."
