WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after House Judiciary Committee Republicans passed H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017, out of Committee:

“In the aftermath of the worst act of individual gun violence in our nation’s history in Las Vegas – and following several recent mass-murders that shocked the conscience of our nation – it is appalling that House Republicans would advance a bill out of committee today that would make our communities less safe from gun violence.  Their legislation would force states to allow out-of-state visitors to carry concealed weapons, even if doing so is illegal under state law.  Law enforcement and community leaders across the country have come out strongly against measures like this one, and I urge House Republican leaders not to bring it to the Floor for a vote.  Instead, we ought to be considering legislation to make our communities safer by closing loopholes in our gun laws and expanding background checks to ensure that domestic abusers, the seriously mentally ill, and terror suspects cannot legally obtain dangerous firearms.”
