WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on President Trump's remarks at a press conference where he reiterated his initial comments blaming "two sides" for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia this weekend:
“Today’s remarks by President Trump are beyond appalling. What happened in Charlottesville was not a two-sided affair. It was a white supremacist rally, clear and simple, where white supremacists, white nationalists and anti-Semites marched with torches in hand in order to promote a vile, anti-democratic ideology of inequality, injustice, and fascism through fear and terror. The only violence that occurred there stemmed from attacks by these marchers against peaceful Americans who stood vigil for the values our nation embodies. If there are indeed two sides, they are heroes against villains, and patriots against those who purvey hatred.
“This President had an opportunity to lead our nation by condemning these actions and those who committed them, and do it with no equivocation. He has chosen not to. He had an opportunity to show the American people that he stands with those who fought against racism and Nazism and not those who promote these evils. The fact that he has not should be horrifying to all Americans.”
