WASHINGTON, DC – Today, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) joined House Democrats at a press event to unveil legislation to protect Americans with pre-existing conditions, reverse the Trump Administration’s health care sabotage, and take new measures to make health care more affordable. Below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

“Last Congress, Republicans passed a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act, raising health care costs and putting Americans with pre-existing conditions at risk. When that effort failed, the Trump Administration made every effort to sabotage the law.

“Just yesterday, the Trump Administration filed a brief in the Texas case against the Affordable Care Act, indicating that it supports taking health care away from millions of Americans and eliminating consumer protections for tens of millions more.

“When Democrats ran on a platform of increasing access to quality health coverage and protecting against discrimination in accessing coverage and care, Americans responded by sending Democrats like Andy Kim, Angie Craig, Lauren Underwood, and Susan Wild to Congress to fight on their behalf.

“The first action the Democratic Majority took was to protect those with pre-existing conditions. Now, Democrats are continuing to deliver on our promises by introducing legislation to reverse the Trump Administration’s health care sabotage, protect those with pre-existing conditions, and make health insurance more affordable.

“I’m proud to join my colleagues in introducing this bill. The Affordable Care Act wasn’t perfect, but it brought real reforms to our health care system that Americans do not want to see undone.

“With the bill we are introducing today, House Democrats are building on those reforms to make sure that every American has access to quality, affordable health care.”
