WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Speaker Ryan and Leader McCarthy announced that President Trump intends to veto the Senate-passed Continuing Resolution to fund government beyond December 21:

“The disaster of Republicans’ dysfunctional House Majority of the past eight years is on full display.  Thousands of hardworking, middle-class federal employees are at risk of losing their paychecks and millions of Americans are under threat of losing critical government services just days before Christmas all because President Trump and Congressional Republicans are deeply divided among themselves.

“With Republicans still in full control of both Congress and the White House, there can be no doubt who will be held responsible if they shut down a large part of the federal government in order to facilitate a temper tantrum by President Trump over a border wall for which he promised taxpayers would not have to pay.  As Speaker Ryan prepares to put legislation to fund the border wall on the Floor, let me remind him that we know it does not have the votes to pass the Senate, and Republicans are needlessly moving the country closer to the shutdown for which President Trump only last week declared he would be proudly responsible.

“I urge Republicans and the President to act with maturity and allow a clean funding bill to move forward now to prevent a dangerous and unnecessary Trump shutdown over Christmas.”
