WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Office of Management and Budget’s analysis that the Senate Budget resolution for Fiscal Year 2017, which includes reconciliation instructions to begin the process of repealing the Affordable Care Act, would add $9.5 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years:

“Yesterday’s analysis by the Office of Management and Budget exposes Republicans’ budget resolution for the gimmick it is: nothing more than a partisan effort to take health coverage away from tens of millions of Americans that never achieves balance and adds $9.5 trillion to our national debt over the next ten years.  Republicans ought to be working with Democrats to promote fiscal sustainability and make sure Americans can keep the health coverage they have.  The hypocrisy of Republicans endorsing a budget with exploding deficits in order to take coverage away from their constituents would be mindboggling if it weren’t so transparently self-serving.  House and Senate Republicans are playing a dangerous game with talk of repealing the Affordable Care Act – one that could sow chaos across our economy and cause health care costs to go up for tens of millions more beyond the 30 million who will flat-out lose their coverage.  It’s time to stop talking about repeal and start discussing ways Democrats and Republicans can work together to improve the law to expand access and lower costs.”
