WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after the House failed to pass a resolution to override President Trump's veto of legislation disapproving of his national emergency at the border:

“Today, House Republicans were given a choice between allowing President Trump to usurp Congress’s power of the purse with an unjustified emergency declaration to fund his border wall or to stand up for the principle of separation of powers in our Constitution.  Only fourteen chose the latter, with the overwhelming majority of Republicans opting to set a dangerous precedent and allow the President to ignore the representatives of the American taxpayers and spend their money against their wishes.  While I am glad that the House issued another bipartisan rebuke of his emergency declaration to fund a wall that both Democrats and Republicans have called expensive and ineffective, I am dismayed that so many Republican Members chose loyalty to the President over fidelity to our Constitution.

“The President’s proposed border wall neither comports with our values as a nation, nor will it make us safer from any threats.  It takes funding away from critical military priorities important to protecting and supporting our troops.  Instead of focusing all his energy and attention on fulfilling a poorly conceived campaign pledge, the President ought to work with Democrats and Republicans in Congress to engage to keep families together and enact immigration reforms supported by an overwhelming majority of Americans.”
