WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the August jobs report:

“The jobs report for August makes it clear that millions of Americans are still struggling without work, and we have a long way to go before we recover from this crisis. While the unemployment rate improved slightly, the massive scope of Americans still out of work means we have far more work to do to build back better. August saw only one in ten unemployed Americans returning to work, leaving the vast majority of those who were relying on a now-expired supplement of $600 a week in emergency unemployment assistance to continue to wait to get back to work without that help, making it more difficult for them to pay their bills and feed their families. President Trump and Republicans allowed that assistance to expire over a month ago. Once again, they are telling Americans: ‘you’re on your own.’

“House Democrats passed the Heroes Act in May to extend emergency unemployment benefits and ensure that those waiting to get back to work can still access that necessary $600 a week. It has now been more than three months, and President Trump and Senate Republicans continue to block that legislation without offering a sufficient alternative. The House remains ready to vote on a relief bill as soon as we have a partner willing to negotiate one. We will continue to do our jobs for the people. It’s time for this President and Senate Republicans to do theirs.”
