WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the beginning of oral arguments in Texas v. United States, Republicans’ lawsuit to strike down protections for 133 million Americans with pre-existing conditions:

“Not content with their efforts to dismantle health care coverage legislatively and by executive actions, Republicans are now trying to use the courts to end guaranteed coverage for those with pre-existing conditions.  For the past eight years, Republicans in Congress have used their House Majority to wage war on the health care protections Democrats implemented in 2010, to the detriment of all Americans who simply want access to affordable care.  This court case is nothing less than an assault on the 133 million Americans who live with pre-existing conditions like asthma, cancer, and diabetes.  If it succeeds, insurance companies will again be able to discriminate against them and deny them coverage or make coverage unaffordable, putting lives and livelihoods at risk.

“While Republicans want to take health care away from Americans, Democrats are fighting to protect affordable health care access for all.  We will defend it in our courts, we will stand up to this President and his executive sabotage of our health care system, and we will take legislative steps to make sure it works for everyone.  Americans deserve leaders who fight for their health, not put it in jeopardy.”
