WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this morning on the chemical attack on civilians in Douma, Syria:

“The chemical attack in Douma was a horrific violation of international law and a crime against humanity. The Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian accomplices must not be allowed to engage in such brutality without consequence. I agree with Senator McCain that President Trump’s statement about disengaging from Syria likely emboldened Assad to act. This is what happens when America abandons its role as a moral leader in the world and sends mixed signals to allies and adversaries alike.

“Given the President’s reckless bluster and contradictory statements, it is imperative for Congress to make clear the basic principles of American policy with regard to this conflict. This must include a robust and sustained commitment to humanitarian assistance; increased pressure on the Syrian regime to end the conflict; and an unambiguous policy that Iran must not gain a permanent foothold in Syria. I immediately call on the White House to lift a hold on humanitarian and stabilization assistance for Syria, and I hope the President will balance any military action with a serious diplomatic strategy to reach a lasting political solution to end this conflict.”
