WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Cinco de Mayo:

"On this day 160 years ago, despite being outgunned and outnumbered, Mexican troops repelled a French invasion at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexicans' triumph over a foreign empire was a testament to their devotion to the principles of self-determination and liberty. Each year, Cinco De Mayo reminds us that the United States and Mexico are bound together not just by our shared border, but also by our shared commitment to freedom.

"Today, let us reaffirm our commitment to our shared values and celebrate the countless contributions Mexican-Americans have made and continue to make to our culture, economy, and democracy. From protecting our Dreamers to supporting the immigrant families that make our communities stronger, from making economic opportunities more readily available to workers and small-business owners to expanding access to affordable health care and child care for families, I will continue to work with the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the full House Democratic Caucus, and the Biden-Harris Administration to ensure that America remains a multicultural land of opportunity for all. We will pursue this goal with the same steadfast courage as those Mexican patriots who stood up to foreign invasion all those years ago, and we will continue to draw inspiration from them on Cinco de Mayo and year-round."
