WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement this afternoon in response to the Congressional Budget Office's estimate of the impacts of House Republicans' bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act:
“No matter how Republicans try to spin it, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) score released today makes clear that the American people will have to pay more for less under their plan. Republicans can no longer deny the magnitude of coverage losses and cost-increases that would result from its enactment. The bill will strip away health coverage from 24 million Americans by 2026, including 7 million who receive health insurance through their employer, and significantly raise out-of-pocket costs for consumers, particularly older Americans. Premiums for individual policyholders would rise 24-29% on average in each of the next two years. 14 million Americans would be kicked off Medicaid, which would be gutted under the Republican plan, and states would be forced to reduce benefits and cut payments to providers, severely limiting access in the program. The CBO report makes clear: a vote for this bill is a vote to limit access, raise costs, and force the chronically ill and lower-income Americans to pay for huge tax breaks for the wealthy.
“The CBO has always been a nonpartisan, respected arbiter of cost and economic impact. That respect must be maintained across party lines, or else we risk creating an environment in which each party can claim its own facts, stifling honest debate. Now that the CBO has weighed in, the Budget Committee should cancel its markup this week on a bill that would harm our economy and working families across this country.”
