WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader-Elect Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the convening of the 116th Congress:

“Today, Democrats enter into the House Majority with a pledge to stand up for working families, oppose egregious abuses by the Trump Administration, and ensure equal justice for all.  Entrusted with control of the Floor, our focus will be a positive legislative agenda of opportunity that empowers working families to get ahead and make it in America.  We will also employ the House’s oversight role responsibly, ensuring greater transparency across government and holding the President and his appointees accountable for their actions.

“In the Democratic freshman class elected in November, Americans can see the diversity and broad experience of this new Majority.  I am proud to be serving as Majority Leader for the most diverse Democratic Caucus in our history, one where broken barriers will surely lead to a more solid foundation for policymaking, as new Members bring voices into the legislative process that need to be heard.  These veterans, health care practitioners, educators, entrepreneurs, activists, and civic leaders have a great deal to offer this House, their communities, and our country.  I look forward to working closely with them to advance our common goals of justice, prosperity, and safety for all Americans.

“Democrats are ready to work with House and Senate Republicans and the President to reach reasonable compromises where we can.  But we will not allow Republicans to throw a wrench into the legislative process or hold Americans hostage to partisan demands, which is why we will use our Majority to take immediate action to end the Trump shutdown and reopen government.  In the spirit of new beginnings, I urge the Senate and President to act on the legislation we will pass today and allow hundreds of thousands of federal workers to get back to work serving this nation.”
