WASHINGTON, DC - House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the Department of Justice Inspector General’s report:

“President Trump continues to try to undermine Americans’ independent law enforcement institutions in order to defend himself against the special counsel’s investigation.  Today’s report by the Department of Justice Inspector General and Republicans’ reaction to it are the latest in that effort.  While the report identifies a number of ways the FBI and Justice Department could have done better, it concludes that there was no political motivation.  In fact, those missteps by the FBI, including Director Comey’s deviations from Department of Justice policy, directly benefited President Trump’s campaign.

“Nonetheless, the President and his team will surely try to paint it as a blanket condemnation of the FBI in order to sow doubt about the agency’s look into him and his business associates and the possibility of collusion with Russia during the 2016 campaign.  It is critical that the FBI and the special counsel be allowed to carry out their nonpartisan and independent investigations unimpeded.  Congress ought to take steps to protect the special counsel so that the American people can learn the truth of what happened in 2016 and understand how to prevent it from occurring again.”
