WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the early departure of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe:

“The early departure of Deputy Director McCabe from his position at the FBI smacks of political interference by the Trump Administration into the inner workings of our nonpartisan system of justice and law enforcement.  It was wrong for the President to criticize the Deputy Director of the FBI publicly amid his complaints about an ongoing investigation into his campaign; if the President was involved in forcing Mr. McCabe out, that would be even worse.  It is dangerous for this President to play politics with the FBI and undermine its work in public safety and homeland security by damaging agency morale.  Indeed, doing so is a feature of authoritarian governments that try to undermine independent law enforcement agencies.

“Our federal law enforcement personnel must remain nonpartisan and uninhibited by politics from carrying out their work.  I hope Democrats and Republicans in Congress will come together to take steps to protect the independence of Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, in light of this development and news that the President tried to fire Mr. Mueller and may be contemplating firing Assistant Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.”
