WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on the February jobs report:

“While the February jobs report continues to show a record streak of job gains going back more than nine years, we also are learning in real time from both our financial markets and from Main Street businesses that we must be prepared for disruptions in global supply chains and lower consumer demand that could impact our economy and working families as a result of the coronavirus. This jobs report also shows a slowdown in wage growth that cannot be ignored.

“The federal government must respond to threats from coronavirus in a serious manner, which is why the House and Senate this week came together to appropriate an emergency sum of $8.3 billion to help contain the spread of coronavirus and accelerate development of treatments and a vaccine.  Recognizing the immediate threat not only to public health, but also the health of our economy, as a first step we authorized the Small Business Administration to offer emergency loans to businesses impacted by coronavirus.

“House Democrats will continue to work hard For the People to meet the economic challenges we face, including from threats such as the one we confront today.  We will continue to focus on economic issues, including by developing and bringing Make It In America legislation to the House Floor aimed at increasing opportunities in education and skills training, entrepreneurship, and infrastructure.  I hope the Senate and President will work with us to advance proposals that have broad, bipartisan support to help more of our people make it in America.”
