WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer released the following statement today on the protests in Hong Kong:

“Freedom of expression and freedom from tyranny in Hong Kong must be preserved - not only because they are guaranteed under the provisions of the 1997 transfer but because the people of Hong Kong deserve these basic, unalienable rights. Developments in recent days continue to alarm Americans and the Congress. I urge the international community to stand with the people of Hong Kong and with the students and other protest leaders who are risking their lives to ensure that their democracy is not diminished or eliminated. I call on the Trump Administration to make it absolutely clear that the United States will not tolerate violations of the human rights of residents of Hong Kong, including the recent arrests of protest leaders such as Josh Wong and Agnes Chow.”
