WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee voted to release a partisan memo about the Federal Bureau of Investigation:

“It is outrageous that Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee would blatantly politicize the investigation into Russia’s interference in our election.  Under our system of checks and balances, Congress has a responsibility to hold the President accountable, not do his partisan bidding, particularly when the President seeks to undermine the work of an independent investigation into possible foreign collusion in the election that saw him placed into office.
“This memo advances the latest conspiracy theory pushed by Republican defenders of this embattled President, this time using selectively chosen, highly classified material in order to defame the FBI and national security agencies.  Such a reckless and spiteful action against our national security agencies and the FBI, in particular, would provide our enemies with insight into some of our most sensitive sources and methods for intelligence gathering, putting our national security at risk.  Chairman Nunes himself said in 2016 that, ‘those who receive classified intelligence should not barter in it – that is reckless behavior with our nation's secrets.’  I would encourage him and his Republican colleagues on the Committee to heed that same advice today.”
