WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Immigrant Heritage Month:

"Throughout June, we celebrate the immigrant heritage of most Americans, recognizing the hardships endured by our forebears and recognizing the contributions of those who came here to build a better life and helped build a better country in the process.  Today, immigrants still face challenges both before and after arriving on our shores, and immigrant communities continue to add so much to our economy and to our national life.  In paying tribute to immigrants and to their triumphs and contributions, we celebrate America itself - and we reaffirm our nation's historic role as a beacon of hope to those seeking a better life.

"Over the past four years, the previous administration pursued immigration and asylum policies that ran counter to our national ethos and disadvantaged us economically.  Not only did the Trump Administration attempt to shut our borders to newcomers and those seeking refuge; it also engaged in the morally reprehensible behavior of separating immigrant and refugee children from their parents, locking them in cages, and treating them inhumanely.  I am thankful that the Biden-Harris Administration has taken critical steps to reverse those policies and is working expeditiously to reunite families while improving conditions for those awaiting legal action in U.S. custody.
"While celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month, we must look to the immigrants of our day and recognize the challenges they face.  I'm proud that our House Majority took action in March to pass legislation that would provide millions of immigrants with permanent legal status, including Dreamers.  I hope the Senate will join us in this effort, and I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues to ensure that America will always be a place of welcome for immigrants and refugees seeking to join us in the work of building a strong, prosperous, safe, and united America."
