WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on Immigrant Heritage Month:

"I join in celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month and commemorating the numerous contributions that immigrants have made to America throughout its history.  America has always served as a land of opportunity for people around the world searching for a better life.  Whether strengthening our communities, building job-creating businesses, or serving in uniform, countless immigrants and their descendants have enriched our culture, strengthened our economy, and safeguarded our democracy.  Their accomplishments and those of our country are one in the same.  As the son of an immigrant, I’m proud of our nation’s role as a beacon of hope and welcome for those wishing to come here and build a better and stronger America.

"Although many immigrants must overcome tremendous peril to reach our shores, often fleeing war and persecution, too many continue to face challenges once here safely in America.  I have worked tirelessly throughout my tenure in Congress to make the American Dream more accessible to those who immigrate to our country.  I was proud to bring the American Dream and Promise Act to the House Floor both this Congress and last to provide a pathway to permanent legal status to Dreamers and those holding T.P.S. and D.E.D. status.  I look forward to continuing to work with my fellow House Democrats to keep immigrant families together and make education and employment opportunities more accessible to the newest Americans.

"Our nation has always depended on the ingenuity, productivity, and patriotism of immigrants from around the world.  This Immigrant Heritage Month, let us remember that we can never afford to turn our backs on those who 'yearn to breathe free.'"
