WASHINGTON, DC - House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement tonight on Israel’s Independence Day, Yom Ha’Atzmaut:

“Tonight, I join in celebrating Yom Ha’Atzmaut and the return of the Jewish people’s sovereignty and self-determination in the land of their ancestors.  Seventy-four years ago, the modern State of Israel was born during a time of tragedy and struggle, of longing and perseverance.  For generations, Jewish people around the world yearned to rebuild their state in the same towns, valleys, shores, and hills where their ancestors gave rise to a storied civilization and strove to maintain their freedom against so many hardships and persecution.  That day finally arrived in 1948, and in the decades since the people of Israel have created a state that is fulfilling the dream of making the desert bloom with new life and inspiring the world as a ‘startup nation.’
“I have traveled to Israel eighteen times and was accompanied by my House Democratic colleagues on many of those journeys, most recently in February of this year.  On each of those visits, I am awed by the resilience of Israel’s people, the ingenuity of its innovators, and the determination of Israelis to build a vibrant and lasting democracy.  Israel’s history has not, however, been without great hardship.  Tempered by war and terrorism, the country has faced challenges not only to its safety and security but also to its very right to exist and be treated as an equal member of the family of nations.
“However, for all the enemies who have raised their hands against Israel, the Jewish State can count on true and abiding friends in America.  I’ve been proud to help lead the broad, bipartisan coalition to defend and strengthen the U.S.-Israel relationship in Congress, and I will continue working to ensure that our country stands with its most steadfast ally in the Middle East.  I look forward to continuing to celebrate Israel’s modern rebirth by taking action to ensure its safety and success.
“May this year ahead bring Israel peace, security, and prosperity as it continues to fulfill the ancient dream of Jewish freedom and sovereignty restored.”
