WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement in recognition of Labor Day:

“Today, Americans will celebrate the workers’ rights victories that enabled generations of our people to make it in America.  Without the activism of organized labor and the perseverance of millions of workers, our nation would not have the most powerful economy in the world and sustain the growth of our middle class.  When workers join together to demand fair wages and benefits, it helps everyone in our economy get ahead, which is why in the face of the Supreme Court’s Janus decision we continue to join together and fight for the rights of all workers – whether public or private sector – to organize and bargain collectively for better pay and benefits and safe work environments.
“In 2018, the achievements we celebrate are under threat, and the American workers to whom we pay tribute face higher hurdles to reach the American Dream.  As a result of the policies of the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans, who put the wealthiest 1% and corporate donors first, workers and their families are facing stagnant wages, higher prescription drug prices, greater difficulty in accessing affordable higher education, and other challenges.  The Trump Administration’s recent decision to effectively cut the pay of hardworking federal employees next year falls into a pattern of disrespecting workers and denigrating those who labor to benefit our country and its economy.
“Democrats are fighting to hold policymakers accountable for corrupt practices that shortchange workers and to enact policies that build on workers’ rights victories, not undermine them.  On this Labor Day, let us continue to stand up for the hard-won rights of working Americans and commit to making the American Dream attainable for all our people.”
