WASHINGTON, DC – House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today on LGBT Pride Month, which begins tomorrow:

“I join in celebrating LGBT Pride Month throughout June, when we pay tribute to those who struggled to achieve the fight for full equality and acceptance – and those who continue that effort today.  Throughout our history, LGBT people have been an integral part of the American story.  As we celebrate pioneers and trailblazers, let us also remember the millions of unsung LGBT Americans whose lives and contributions were not recognized during their lifetimes.  We remember them today, however, and we are thankful and proud that their stories form a part of our own.

“We live at a time of wonderful and positive change when it comes to LGBT rights and equality, but so much of that work remains unfinished, and millions of LGBT Americans continue to be at risk of discrimination. I was proud to bring the Equality Act to the House Floor last month, where it passed with strong support, just as I was proud to bring legislation to the Floor ending ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ in 2010.  I urge the Senate to pass the Equality Act now and end legal discrimination against LGBT people in every area where it remains, including housing, education, employment, personal finance, jury service, and public accommodation.

“House Democrats will not rest until full equality is achieved.  That’s why we also took action to disapprove of the Trump Administration’s ban on transgender people serving in our military.  That ban is shameful and puts our national security at risk by preventing talented and driven Americans from serving their nation.

“As we continue to fight back against this Administration’s disturbing anti-LGBT policies, House Democrats will continue to promote equality, opportunity, and justice for all.  I wish all who are celebrating a very joyous and meaningful LGBT Pride Month in 2019.”
