WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after it was announced that President-Elect Trump will nominate Steven Mnuchin to serve as Treasury Secretary and Wilbur Ross to serve as Commerce Secretary in the incoming Administration:

“The nominations of Steven Mnuchin as Treasury Secretary and Wilbur Ross as Commerce Secretary reveal an incoming administration that is seriously out of touch with working Americans. Mr. Mnuchin, a Wall Street insider whose conflicts of interest rival even those of the President-Elect who nominated him, and Mr. Ross, an ideologue who believes tearing apart workers' rights and workplace safety rules are the key to economic growth, represent the wrong approach to our economic challenges. Both will have to answer tough questions from Senators during their confirmation hearings about their qualifications and must explain how they intend to help all Americans get ahead - not just the millionaires and billionaires in their own circles.

"The American people deserve economic leaders who are committed to stopping abuses on Wall Street, keeping foreign markets open to U.S. exports, and ensuring that our financial markets operate fairly and promote economic growth that creates opportunity for all.  Our economy must work for every American, not just those at the very top, and House Democrats will work to hold the Treasury and Commerce Departments in the next administration accountable to that principle."
