WASHINGTON, DC – House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today marking the one-year anniversary of President Trump announcing his decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“One year ago today, President Trump announced he was ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and challenged Congress to address this crisis of his own making within six months.  Twice that length of time has now passed, and the President and Republican-led Congress have done nothing to enable DREAMers to remain in the only country they call home, notwithstanding the fact that nearly 90% of Americans want us to ensure DREAMers can stay here. President Trump has rejected every bipartisan proposal put forward that would have allowed DREAMers to stay, while Republicans leaders in Congress blocked the House from working its will through a bipartisan process.
“Democrats are committed to finding a solution that allows DREAMers to remain with their families and continue playing a positive, productive role in building America’s future.  These young people, who were brought here as children, grew up in America and are patriots who only wish to continue working to make our nation stronger, safer, and more prosperous. They are doctors, teachers, nurses, engineers, lawyers, and civic leaders in our communities.  Our nation would be diminished by their absence.
“While the courts have allowed DACA renewals to continue, DREAMers deserve certainty and Congress must enact a permanent solution to correct the reckless decision that the President made a year ago.  The current Republican-led Congress hasn’t done its job.”
